Deep inside the Kashi Vishwanath temple precinct lies the Gyanvapi Well, which translates to "Well of Knowledge". Historical records and oral tradition describe how in 1669, when the temple faced destruction, the head priest leaped into the well holding the sacred Jyotirlinga to preserve it from harm.
Water from this well was historically believed to impart divine wisdom. Even today, the well is held in immense veneration by pilgrims worldwide.
